Bhamini vilasah-21

The lotus-like face of the lover who quickly went away to a distance from the reddened eyes of the lady after touching her bosom remained silent for ever.

Even when surrounded by the elderly my girl cast her glances at me slightly revealing her lotus-stalk like golden arm (by raising it) in the pretext of scratching her cheek.

When I mildly hit her with a lotus stalk while she was amidst elders, having seen me with my eyebrows lowered and my ear-rings dancing slightly, she turned herself away. [ The poet plays a mischief  with his lady when she was amidst elders by stroking her with a lotus stalk and feigning innocence. She notices the mischief maker and quietly turns herself away to avoid any embarrassment amidst elders.]

Doe-eyed damsel! When I display politeness your eyes become red, if I bow before you (in supplication) you shed tears copiously, if I leave your living itself in doubt. How shall I feel happy?

O auspicious sleep! Other than you who else will report (to me) of my slender beloved who while saying, “ You merciless! Ocean of lies! Leave the borders of my dress, I have known well your love for me,” shed tears copiously having removed all her ornaments. [ The poet who is away from his beloved thanks the sleep during which he dreamt of his beloved.]

On the banks there is the smiling face of the damsel; in water there is a lotus resplendent; looking at both, the confused string of young bees mad at getting the nectar runs towards both.

Observing the mark made by the necklace of the other woman on the chest of the beloved, the damsel quickly withdrew her arms which had rested on his ahoulders.

I constantly remember the company of the lady, who had her neck bent low, whose amiable lotus-like eyes were slightly shut and whose limbs were languid on account of heavy breathing.

When I went away in anger and later returned after a couple of hours and started mumbling some story at the doorway, knowing my arrival my lady came out of the quarters very slowly like Lakshmi with her eyes tremulous through fear.

Bhamini vilasah-20

My dear lady! After having stolen successively the grandeur of jujube, aamla, mango and pomegranate fruits your breasts are now trying to steal the grandeur of the frontal globes on the head of an elephant calf.

O blue-lotus-eyed lady! Having easily outclassed the radiance of jambira fruits, your breasts which put to shame charming golden pots are now competing with the Meru mountain!  [ Wild imagination of a love-smitten youth!]

O slim lady blessed by beauty! I consider the edge of your cheeks where the charming luster of the ears (श्रवणस्य) appears under the elegant forelocks  (अलका) as the Northern direction, where Kubera’s (वैश्रवणस्य) wealth appears in the elegant city of Alakaa. [The poet contrives an analogy through use of words of double meaning. Alakaa is the capital of Kubera (वैश्रवण),  Lord of wealth.]

The luster of the navel of (my lady) whose waist was as slender as the stalk of a lotus does not descend from my mind, as she sets right her saree knot wanting to get up from the bed after having observed the light at day break.

As she played with her friends while chattering with them about my talks, having heard my voice from a distance she bore the elegance of lightning. [The lady appeared and disappeared like lightning due to shyness.]

In the night as I pretended to leave uttering falsely angry words, what words of mine did she not agree to with her body bent and tears flowing out of her eyes?

The power of discrimination born out of good thoughts from hundreds of mythology (puranas), Shastras (sacred precepts) and law books (Smruti) is in good shape as long as the playfulness of the doe-eyed lady does not enter my mind. [Much of these is fine romantic poetry that could be memorized by the youth to recite at the right occasion.]

When will my doe-eyed (wife) cool my eyes like moonlight after suddenly appearing at the door-way apprehensively hearing from others, “(your) husband has arrived,” ?  [ The lady is apprehensive perhaps because she feels she is being fooled by others or that she is not adequately dressed up to receive her husband. How will she know that her husband is too eager to see her however she be dressed? A sentiment, generally experienced by married  young men, beautifully expressed by the poet.]

The face of (my) charming lady blossomed seeing my arrival as she looked out at the door-way in the evening at the appointed time. [ The poet hints at a simile of a blue lotus blossoming at the arrival of the moon.]

Bhamini vilasah-19

Now in Bhaminivilasa
The second section
Sentiment of love
Damsel! Around your face there is not even the slightest fear of Rahu’s attack; there is no dark mark approaching; there is no paleness; An indescribable luster is increasing only. [The poet conveys that damsel’s face excels that of moon in all possible ways. Generally poets often compare a lady’s face to that of the moon. In this case the poet says that moon stands no comparison to lady’s face.]

If the softness of your limbs is to be considered, strings of lotuses are (compared to your limbs) very rough; the lotus stalks pale into insignificance, what can be said of the young sprouts? [ Poets generally compare the softness of a woman’s limbs to that of lotus, lotus stalk or young sprouts. In case of the lady who has caught the fancy of the poet those comparisons will not do.]

The indescribably beautiful state of the lady of intoxicating glances with edges of her cheeks looking graceful by the drops of sweat and made adorable by the swinging ear rings engenders happiness in my mind when I remember her.

Lady friend! Wearing a tilak of kasturi, visit the top of the terrace sporting a smile. Let the white water lilies open up and in all directions let delight spread liberally. [ The lady’s face with the tilak as the mark and her smile as moonlight acts as moon when she appears on the terrace so that water lilies open up and there is light all round!]

That pleasant smile, those breathings, that unblemished radiance of her sweet face of my lady whose eyes resemble water lilies which bloom in the evening madden my heart even now, alas.

Early in the morning as she bowed to her elders, hearing their guileless words, “become a mother of a son”, dear lady’s glances full of happiness turned towards her sweet heart who stood by her side. [The poet leaves it to the imagination of the reader to fathom the significance of her glances.]

Alas I do not forget the eyes as beautiful as the slightly opened lotuses of the doe-eyed (lady) who displayed a sense of rising confusion as she looked at me with a fear of the elderly persons around.

Bhamini vilasah-18

Shameless bee! How do you pursue the pollen-ridden white ketaka flower, which is accompanied by a multitude of thorns? [ Using words having two meanings the poet indirectly shames a man who pursues a woman in her monthly periods-सरजस्काम्- who is pale-पाण्डुवर्णाम्- and who has horripilation,-कण्टकप्रकरान्विताम्- apparently due to fear of being pursued in her state.]

Just as music does not shine without taan, just as a king does not shine without dignity, just as an elephant does not shine without ichor an ascetic does not shine without knowledge.

The good qualities of persons spread on their own and not because of others. The fragrance of kasturi is not experienced through an oath of proclamation. [Just as the fragrance of kasturi spreads on its own, the good qualities of a person become known to others  without anyone’s assistance.]

O musk! Fie on you! Do not be excessively proud that your fragrance is foremost among all fragrances. You make your own father who led a hapless life hidden in the cavern of a hilly forest lifeless. [Musk is extracted from the glands of the musk deer, which in the process gets killed. The poet berates a famous person who in the process of becoming famous has harmed his own people.]

Company of the virtuous drives away bad intentions, cleans the mind, diminishes long acquired sin, and broadens the attitude of compassion toward all beings; what benefits does it not bring?

The words of the great who are unceasingly engaged in doing good to others appear bitter at first like medicines.

I think that in this forest, families of trees have their branches bent low touching the ground enchanted by the tunes and the rhythms after listening to the sonorous songs of swarms of humming bees. [The poet exaggerates that forest trees are bent low listening to the enchanting hums of the bees.]

Desire to get back (life) for the dead, desire to give for the miser, liking towards ones husband for a woman who has gone astray, peace for a snake, friendship for a wicked person, all these have not been so far seen in the creation of Brahma. [These things are not realizable.]

There is nothing like being faithful even among the best of women. The night-lotuses dear to the moon (राजन्=moon) flirt with bees. [ The poet suggests that even those women dear to a king enjoy the company of other lovers.]

Destiny is unbridled; it gives happiness unasked for, does not give when asked for, it steals all your belongings.

Now which king will not remember angry Arjuna in Khandava forest which was getting destroyed by the dancing flames arising out of the groups of arrows leaving the vibrating Gandiva bow when he sees you in the battle field destroying the formidable enemy forces with the arrows from the shining bow bent by (your) staff like shoulders? [ The poet is apparently praising a king and to impress him has used long harsh-sounding compound words to suit the mood of heroism.]

May the rays of the sun, which decorate the horizon all round and which expertly gladden the lotus-like eyes of a lady of Khandita variety protect (us). [It is a closing benedictory verse being the last verse in the first chapter. Khandita is a woman who has been cheated by the husband who returns home early in the morning after having slept with another woman. She is glad that the long night has ended as she sees the sun’s rays.]

Thus ends the first section of Bhaminivilasa
composed by the poet
Panditaraaja (king among scholars) Jagannatha.

Bhamini vilasah-17

Dear friend! You did a great job and earned blemish free fame. We shall bless you profusely till our end. [ It could be a praise or a sarcastic statement!]

The words of the virtuous who unceasingly work for the welfare of others are very sweet ambrosia. And their mind is the ocean; their fame is the pure autumnal moon light on a full moon night.

While the cuckoo was thinking that spring would come and rejuvenate its sunken voice, a hunter shot it with his arrow.  [A repetition of the idea in verse 58.]

Just as the silk-cotton tree, which adorns itself with flowers whose beauty lasts till they fall down, does not shine, a person with no good qualities even if he puts on a show does not shine. [Called Simal in Hindi, silk-cotton tree has a thorny trunk and bears fruits which burst to give out cotton-like floss.]

A lake shines when it is free from slush; a conference shines if it is free of wicked persons; a literary work shines if it is free from harsh syllables; a mind shines if it is free from sensory desires.

It is only a rare person who understands anything of the essence of a literary work. Who has a deep insight into the honey of flowers other than the honey-bee? [Just as only a honeybee can appreciate the honey of flowers, only a rare set of persons can appreciate poetry.]

Meeting with a wicked person is forest fire to the animal called happiness, is an elephant in rut to a tree called good manners, is hurricane to the lamp called knowledge. [In three apt metaphors the poet brings out the destructive influence of a wicked person on ones happiness, manners and knowledge.]

A serpent has been placed in the guise of a tongue in the mouths of the crooked by Brahma. How could it otherwise happen that gullible people licked by the tongue do not survive? [ The wagging tongue of the crooked destroys gullible people as their tongue is a serpent in the guise of the tongue!]

[The poet, using श्लेष indirectly refers to the attitude of a fickle-minded person towards a lady of stead-fast love.]

[ Kaliyug, the last of the four yugs is characterized by general degeneration where it is not the internal qualities of the mind that matter but only external appearance and show.]

O spring time, when the bees buzz pleasantly on the mango tree having soft coppery shoots! Without you the cuckoo finds all the directions to be smoky with the lotuses torn asunder and its body being burnt by the wind like fire. [ The poet imagines that the cuckoo finds its life miserable without the spring, which is the main source of strength for it. He thereby suggests that the talent of a talented person withers without the proper support.]
