Bhamini vilasah-35

How will the moon which grew up along with vadava fire, kalakuta poison, crocodiles and snakes not become a cause for death of people? [ Having grown up with bad elements in the milky ocean it is no wonder if moon is considered by love-sick people as scourge.]

As a result of good deeds done in the past birth, one gets a charming wife; through her are got sons of good character around; through them is got expanding fame; through fame eternal heaven is obtained.

Lady of handsome thighs! Even a lord becomes suddenly small when he wants to ask for something. I have become despondent as you, being ill disposed, have refused my request for a kiss.

While bringing from the pond the water-pot filled with water, your secret dalliance in the shrubs of banks (of the pond) is known only to Lord Cupid.

Traveller! like you, my loving  husband goes through hardship (spending time) in groves of trees. What else can be said of my welfare other than that I am alive? [A housewife replies to a traveller when asked about her welfare. Is it suggestive of her being available? Only the poet knows.]

“Lady with slender middle! Why are you so lean?” “How do other’s matters concern you?” “Even then, tell me for my amusement.” Traveller! Your wife will tell you.” [It is a conversation between a traveler and a housewife. She implies that she is lean for the same reason that the traveller’s wife would be lean, namely separation from her husband.]

Lady of fair complexion! Without comparing yourself (with others) do not show excessive haughtiness. How many are the trees heavily laden with fruits that are there in deep forests! [Do not be proud of your physical endowments. There are many like you even in remote places.]

Dear friend! The luster of your face has blossomed; your lotus-like eyes have opened up. Has the dark-cloud-coloured Krishna appeared rendering the world to be full of clouds? [With the appearence of cloud-like Krishna on the scene there is his dark luster all around and his sweetheart’s face has brightened.]

Lady of self respect! After devotedly worshipping the sun staying under water since evening the lotus has now attained a bit of comparability with your face. [Lotus has to do penance under water to attain comparability with her face!]

Dear lady of slender limbs! If you make your face pleasant even a bit by a smile, alas, you may take it for granted that the suzerainty of the moon (over pleasantness) gets doused.

Bhamini vilasah-34

For those whose minds are far off from their physical presence on account of separation (from their beloved) the cool of the lotus-stalk, breeze, chandana, khas root, moss and lotus is merely a belief without their being cool. [These materials are supposed to provide relief from the heat experienced by separated lovers and the poet says that they do not provide any relief but it is only a belief.]

In the morning, the sun is in all his glory as he, filled with redness (love), wakes up by the touch of his rays (hand), the lotus (Padmini lady) which had its face closed. [The poet using words of double meaning cleverly conjures up a parallel of a lover tenderly waking up his beloved- a lady belonging to padmini category- who has slept after an amorous night.]

When I started to leave for the distant country, despite having been dissuaded by her, bent low and with tender words, my angry young lady blocked my way by the crossing of the pet kitten (across the path) which she could command by her fingers. [ If a kitten crosses ones way it is considered a bad omen and one may not proceed on ones journey.]

Lady of slender limbs! While this face of yours spreads ambrosia all around, the power of cupid, who has arrows of flowers is without any impediment and the heat experienced in the eyes by people has vanished along with darkness. Why does this white moon rise everyday? [Your face has taken over the functions of the moon and the presence of moon is not required!]

The plentiful, bewitching, lovely and playful acts of the lady whose eyes are large like blue lotuses flourish piercing the hearts of even the wise youth   without the use of any weapon.

Ever since youth, the abode of gaiety, appeared in the moon-faced girl the hearts of young men are burning without any fire.

When a lady spoke about her rival to her lover thus, “While you are being talked about she does not meet the eye, she does not speak with a smile, and she sports a frown on her eye-brows”, her lover’s hold of love on the lady got loosened. [It had the effect opposite to what she intended!]

Bhamini vilasah-33

Dear friend of slender limbs! I consider that the darkness of forest which has assumed the shape of your hair on the head is so enchanting and brilliant as though because the radiance of your moon-face has not entered there. [ As आलि is generally a form of addressing a female by a female friend, it is to be believed that this is said by a woman. As the luster of the moon-like face has no way of entering the forest of hair on the head, the darkness of hair is all the more enchanting.]

Does this row of lotuses performing the worship of the sun in water which reaches to the necks (of lotuses) do penance in order to attain the status of the breasts of the lady of dense eye-lashes?

Dear love-sick lady! Your necklace of pearls does penance over the fireplace of separation, which is in the form of your heart, only for the happiness of union with your lover.

I believe that lotus-born Brahma, who created your face which is a treasure of all that is beautiful, was affected by a great delusion when he the successful creator like a depraved person made the artless lowly moon the king (राजन् also means moon) neglecting you needlessly.

Lady of slender limbs! Your devoted mind has come out in the form of the gem between the breasts in order to see your beloved.

Does the moon rise in the guise of the face of the doe-eyed lady, completely filling up the space all round with its rays full of ambrosia? [When the lady appears it is like a moon-rise.]

If darkness, the moonlight of autumnal moon, lotus, coral gem, the sprout of champak tree came together then indeed can her face be partly compared. [ her dark hair, her glowing charm, her face, her red lips and her teeth compare with the things mentioned.]

While the lover spoke with love the words, “Dear! Do not grieve,”  streams of tears slipped away from her eyes liberally and her anger born out of jealousy also slipped away from her mind.

The moon seems to be painting the whole world with lime learning that cupid is being coronated. [ Moon-light stimulates romance.]

Seeing her face covered by the wandering fore locks of hair, I am reminded of the lotus with an assembly of hovering bumble-bees.

When she, departing with her elders, turned back her lotus-like face smilingly, the whole world was greatly hurt. [She must have looked back at her lover and the lover imagines that the whole world is hurt by that glance.]

Let the eyes carry similarity with the wagtails endowed with variegated bodily postures. How can the charming face of the good-looking lady be compared to the lotus whose grace is temporary? [Possibly it could be interpreted as follows: A lotus could only be compared to the face of a lady so long as wagtails which resemble the flirting glances of the lady are around the lotus.]

Bhamini vilasah-32

Looking at the beautiful face of the charming lady, all got a doubt if it was a lotus or the orb of the moon.

Looking at Rama who was meeting his beloved (Sita) who had the luster of liquid gold, the young cataka birds danced mistaking them to be a cloud with lightening. [Rama is dark like cloud while Sita has the luster of lightening. Seeing them together Cataka birds mistook that cloud with lightening had appeared.]

All people call her a woman. Let them call so. In my view she is the fulfillment of all penances undertaken by the youth!

Cakora birds and bees became very happy looking at the smiling face of that playful lady there. [Cakora birds mistook the face to be moon and bees mistook it to be a full blown lotus!]

Young lady! When you carry an element of the charms of a smile on your lotus-like face, I know that this world has been conquered by the cupid.

Cranes which are half immersed in the expanses of Yamuna’s waters and are making a lot of noise, I believe, are children of the moon crying for being thrown out by darkness. [ Cranes being white and Yamuna’s waters being traditionally described as dark enable the poet to draw this exaggeration.]

The breasts of the lady with bent eye-brows became larger due to their happy mutual togetherness. I think her waist has thinned down being unable to tolerate the manner and exaltedness of them (breasts).

Bhamini vilasah-31

Lady bent low with the weight of breasts! Just as you are very much equal to the creeper which is bent low due to the weight of clusters of flowers, proud lady! the creeper with new shoots is similar to you whose lips are red. [Red lips are like new shoots and breasts are like clusters of flowers of the creeper.]

Had it not been that young women with heavy breasts steal (our) hearts, this forest area charming with creepers bent low by the flower-clusters would have been enjoyable all the time. [The creepers bent low with flower clusters remind the poet of young women who steal hearts.]

The lady whose joy expanded with my arrival and by staying awake (with me) whose faults were gone, did not wake up in the morning even by the (sound) of bumble bees which were buzzing around her face attracted by the fragrance of her face. [The lady slept soundly after having had a pleasant time with her lover.]

Charming lady! Because of the might of Cupid who is known for his unimaginable power, your face has remarkably assumed the shape of moon and your eyes have attained identity with the petals of lotus. [You could interpret that youth of the lady or the love-struck nature of the beholder or both were responsible for such an effect.]

This beautiful lady full of vivacity having fish-like eyes, having hands and feet like blossomed lotuses and her hair like a rivulet is indeed (resembling) a lake.

Dull headed traveler! Why do you suffer heat (grief)? Seek the cloud (breast) by which you can get solace. [The poet plays on words सन्ताप and पयोधर.]

Looking at this very slender lady whose radiance had lit up all around, there was a doubt in the minds of men whether she was a lightning or a white (moon-lit) night.

Those who looked at her who had a smiling face and playful hands and feet doubted whether she was a creeper with sprouts or a lotus plant with fully open petals.

Bhamini vilasah-30

O lotus-eyed lady! Looking at  your face with the forehead being marked  with the (dark) mark looking like that of a deer’s navel (in the moon), the cakora birds are  constantly flexing their beaks while their delicate roots of wings sprout as it were due to joy. [The cakora birds, which are supposed to eagerly wait for the moon’s rays mistake the dark tilaka mark on the forehead of the lady to be the mark in the moon and the face of the lady to be the moon.]

O lady of slender limbs! Just as the lake is devoid of beauty in winter and just as the moon’s orb is devoid of beauty in the day, your face is devoid of charm when you are angry.

If only her face with trembling eyes like a lotus over which a bumble bee hovers could be seen let cupid get angry, so what? [Cupid perhaps enjoys while lovers pine for each other’s company or are in each other’s company. If the lover manages to see his lover’s face only, it is neither here nor there. So cupid could get angry!]

The fate which made me, a person with an extremely hard heart, a friend of that lady who was ambrosia personified as it were, is truly heartless. [ Lamentation of a person who has wronged her lady love.]

Young lady! Your face with a forehead marked by a dark sign, looks like a lotus which has just opened out with a sleeping bumble-bee inside it.

O moon! How can you rejoice by  considering yourself as a person of luster, second to none? Fool! Who indeed has seen all this world? [ My lady love is more  lustrous than you!]

The face of the doe-eyed lady, covered by the dark border of the saree looks like the moon’s  mark reflected in the deep waters of Yamuna.

The wavy lock of hair falling on the expanses of the breasts from her cheek looks like a serpent dangling over Meru mountain from the orb of moon. [ The lock of hair looks like a serpent, her face looks like moon, her breasts are like Meru mountains. The poet weaves an imaginary simile!]

Bhamini vilasah-29

This is not smile; it is a natural blossoming. Who says, “it is face”? It is a flower with enhanced fragrance. It is false to say they are breasts. They are a pair of golden fruits. She is not a lady; she is indeed a beautiful creeper respected by the class of bumble bees. [It is the poet’s way of exaggerating the similarity between a lady and a creeper.]

This is the sun rising swallowing this sky with his ember-hot rays (hands). The dark portion is indeed the sky being seen through the central hole punched by countless kings killed in battle. Which animal has dubbed this a moon? [The poet finds the rising moon to be as hot as the sun and he believes that the dark portion of the orb is a hole punched by valorous kings killed in battle. This draws upon a myth that valorous persons killed in battle pierce through the sun and enter their final abode.]

The darkness and the whiteness in the eyes of women with charming eyes is not their form. Clearly it is poison and ambrosia. Otherwise why will the youth swoon when dark glances fall on them and feel happy when the white glances fall on them? [ It  looks like the poet finds the threatening glances of ladies dark and their endearing glances white !]

Is it a bumble-bee, a deer or the eye which shines there? Is it a lotus, moon or the face of the doe-eyed lady? [ The poet feels confused as to what he sees is an eye of the lady, or a bumble bee on a lotus or a deer-mark on the moon!]

O Charming lady! whose distinct gems are the stars, whose white dress is the moonlight and whose face is the full moon, you are the full moon night, there is no doubt.

Her form is the water, her unsteady eyes (the fish), her navel is the whirlpool, her tresses of hair the snakes, this young lady is a dangerous stream where saintly persons drown.

Lady of slender limbs! The luster of rows of your elegant teeth shining through the rays of red lips looks like that of stamens of the face-lotus.

Dear! In the guise of the luster of teeth, these stamens show themselves off. Besides, bees in the guise of curls on the forehead are coveting the honey of the flower. [This again implies the lotus-like face.]

With the lady of doe-like eyes looking like Tilottama, the apsaras, this world of mine became heaven! [Reference is to Tilottama, one of celestial dancers in the assembly of Indra.]
