सेतुबन्धम्-४१

णिव्वडिअधूमणिवहो उद्धाइअमरग‍अप्पहामिलिअसिहो ।

वित्थिण्णम्मि समुद्दे सेआलोम‍इलिओ व्व घोल‍इ जलणो ॥ ५-७६ ॥

[ निर्वलितधूमनिवह उद्धावितमरकतप्रभामिलितशिखः ।

  विस्तीर्णे समुद्रे शेवालावमलिन इव घूर्णते ज्वलनः ॥]

Fire revolves in the vast expanse of the ocean with its plume looking like the lustre of emeralds and enveloped by smoke and it looks as though the fire is dirtied by the green moss.

जल‍इ वलवाणलो विअ फुट्ट‍इ सेलो व्व रामबाणाहिह‍ओ ।

रस‍इ जल‍ओ व्व उअही खुहिओ लङ्घेइ मारुओ व्व णह‍अलम् ॥ ५-७७ ॥

[ ज्वलति वडवानल इव स्फुटति शैल इव रामबाणाभिहतः ।

  रसति जलद इवोदधिः क्षुभितो लङ्घयति मारुत इव नभस्तलम् ॥]

Ocean agitated by the assault of Rama’s arrows burns like Vadava fire, explodes like rock, roars like cloud and jumps to the sky like wind.

होइ थिमिअम्मि थिमिओ वल‍इ वलन्तम्मि विहड‍इ विसंघडिए ।

परिवड्डिअम्मि वड्ढ‍इ सलिले क्षीणे केवलं क्षीयते समुद्रः ॥ ५-७८ ॥

[ भवति स्तिमिते स्तिमितो वलति वलमाने विघटते विसंघटिते ।

  परिवर्धिते वर्धते सलिले क्षीणे केवलं क्षीयते ज्वलनः ॥]

Fire becomes calm when the waters of the ocean calm down; revolves where water is revolving; splits into parts where water splits into parts; grows when ocean swells; becomes weak when water is receding.

रामसराणलप‍अविअझिज्जन्तो‍अहिवित्ततडविच्छेआ ।

ते च्चिअ तहवित्थारा तुङ्गा दीसन्ति दीवमण्डलिबन्धा ॥ ५-७९ ॥

[ रामशरानलप्रतापितक्षीयमाणोदधिविभक्तितटविच्छेदाः ।

  त एव तथाविस्तारास्तुङ्गाः दृश्यन्ते द्वीपमण्डलीबन्धाः ॥]

Chains of islands look raised and enlarged due to water getting dried up, showing up the shores, because of the heat generated by the arrows of Rama.

इअ दाविअपा‍आलं जलणसिहावट्टमाणजलसंघा‍अम् ।

रामो दलिअमहिहरं खविअभुअंगणिवहं खवेइ समुद्दम् ॥ ५-८० ॥

[ इति दर्शितपातालं ज्वलनशिखावर्त्यमानजलसंघातम् ।

  रामो दलितमहीधरं क्षपितभुजङ्घनिवहं क्षपयति समुद्रम् ॥]

Thus Rama destroys the ocean revealing the netherworld, with mass of water getting churned up along with the flame of the fire, mountains crumbling and snakes getting killed.

जलपब्भारपलोट्टिअभमन्तसङ्ख‍उलविहलमुक्ककन्दम् ।

फुडिअववडवामुद्दाणलपलित्तदरदड्ढसंचरन्तविसहरम् ॥ ५-८१ ॥

[ जलप्राग्भारप्रलुठितभ्रमच्छङ्खकुलविह्वलमुक्ताक्रन्दम् ।

  स्फुटितवडवामुखानलप्रदीप्तदरदग्धसंचरद्विषधरम् ॥]

The conch-shell creatures in the ocean were crying in agony rolling on the sea shore and the half-burnt sea-snakes were moving around burnt by the exploding Vadava fire. 

झिज्जन्तजलालोइअकिरणमुणिज्जन्तर‍अणपव्व‍असिहरम् ।

थोरतरङ्गकराह‍अदिसाल‍आभग्गपडिअजलहरविडवम् ॥ ५-८२ ॥

[ क्षीयमाणजलालोकितकिरणज्ञायमानरत्नपर्वतशिखरम् ।

  स्थूलतरङ्गकराहतदिग्लताभग्नपतितजलधरविटपम् ॥]

With the water level receding, the peaks of gem-laden peaks of submerged mountains could be seen and the tree-like clouds along with broken creeper-like directions fell into the ocean hit by the hand-like huge waves.

साणलसरणिद्दारिअसकेसरुज्जलिअसीहम‍अरवक्खन्धम् ।

आसण्णभीअविसहरवेढिअकरिम‍अरधवलदन्तप्फलिहम् ॥ ५-८३ ॥

[ सानलशरनिर्दारितसकेसरोज्ज्वलितसिंहकरस्कन्धम् ।

  आसन्नभीतविषधरवेष्टितकरिमकरधवलदन्तपरिघम् ॥]

The shoulders of sea-lions with their manes got burnt by the fire-laden arrows (of Rama). The beam-like white trunks of sea-elephants were clasped by the near-by snakes.
