Being faultless, having positive qualities, being full of sentiments, being well adorned, speaking melodious words my lady like my poetry is always delightful and never leaves my heart.[ All the epithets निर्दूषणा, गुणवती, रसभावपूर्णा, सालङ्कृतिः, श्रवणमङ्गलवर्णराजिः are applicable to both poetry and the lady.]

Ever since you left this place (world), the anxiety of lotuses was quenched, the orb of moon got an unequalled grace and the cooing of cuckoos became prominent. [ So long as you were around, lotuses were not in ascendance, the moon was not at his best and the cooing of cuckoos were not the sweetest as you were a rival to them.]

Having given me the pleasures just for a few days fit for Mahendra, like the flash of a lightning, you have slipped away from my hands who is bereft of good fortune in the way the kingdom slips away from a king who is not properly counseled.

Lady of tremulous eyes! The full moon night which had made poets feel fruitless in this world which had acquired brightness from the luster of your sweet smile has now obtained the grace of Lakshmi after your demise. [Lamentation of a lover who has lost his beloved. So long as the lady was alive, the full moon night had been robbed of its grandeur.]

Bhaminivilasah-40

Now starts the third section of Bhamnivilasa on Compassion

O mind! When the fate is not favourable and the gem among relatives has left for heaven, now to whom will you tell your real state and who is there to relieve you of your pains with kind words? [Lamentations of a bereaved person.]

Young lady! How is it that you who would get up with courtesy suddenly with smiles and charming glances which are the helpers of Cupid now do not cool me with your pleasantly composed words even to a small extent? Alas!

All sensory objects are forgotten; knowledge possessed with difficulty has turned away (from me); Only that doe-eyed lady does not move away from my mind as if she is my guardian angel.

Merciful lady! Hastily entering the auspicious state of eternal peace, you have left behind even your kindness as you did not look at me with your glances which are proud of having broken the pride of morning blue lotuses. [Perhaps a lamentation of a lover as his lady-love departs from this world.]

Playful lady! How is it that you, who during marriage stepped on the seat of stone holding my hand fearing a false step, have gone up to heaven leaving me? My heart breaks into hundred pieces.

Dear friend! How are you listening to unbridled poets comparing breasts with the frontal globes on the forehead of elephants? (I now know) Women understand in the reverse manner. [Poet wants to imply that instead of breasts being compared with the frontal globes on the forehead of the elephant, it is the frontal globes which need to be compared with breasts!]

Although the whiteness of the teeth of the lady with long eye-lashes was covered by the redness because of close contact with the lips, it grew its wings as it were and became lively again because of the white smile.

Doe-eyed lady! How can we recognize the (consumption) of betel leaves in your face which has bimba fruit-like lips which put to shame the fragrance of the lotus stalk and which has gem-like teeth? [The redness of betel-leaf chewing cannot be discerned, because of the natural redness of the lips.]

Lady of golden limbs! If you buy men’s hearts by giving your body, it is alright; but (it is not alright) if you steal the hearts of men by just giving a side-glance.

When I entered the pleasure chambers after making signs to her friends to move away and started fanning the angry lotus-eyed lady who was lying down, she, who had closed her eyes and pretended that she was unaware of my presence although she was aware, placed my hand on her bosom saying, “Maid! you are tired.” [A beautiful piece of poetry! The lady wants her lover to believe that she is placing his hand on her bosom thinking that it is the hand of her maid who was fanning!]

The doe-eyed maiden’s gait slowed down along with her girlhood, her bimba-fruit-like lower lip attained redness along with her mind (which got inclined in matters of love), her hips became weighty along with her interest in dalliance. [With the use of suggestive words, poet tries to also compare her slowness in gait with that of Saturn (मान्थर्यम्), her redness of lips with that of Mars (रक्तम्) and heaviness of hips with that of Jupiter (गुरुः).]

The more and more I enjoyed the lotus-eyed lady lovingly and repeatedly, the more and more she changed me, like a philosophical story would, to be attached to a single sentiment. [While a philosophical story is likely to lead him to a shanta rasa, his attachment to her is leading him to srungara rasa solely.]

Traveller! like you, my loving  husband goes through hardship (spending time) in groves of trees. What else can be said of my welfare other than that I am alive? [A housewife replies to a traveller when asked about her welfare. Is it suggestive of her being available? Only the poet knows.]

“किमिति कृशासि कृशोदरि?” “किं तव परकीयवृत्तान्तैः?” ।

“Lady with slender middle! Why are you so lean?” “How do other’s matters concern you?” “Even then, tell me for my amusement.” Traveller! Your wife will tell you.” [It is a conversation between a traveler and a housewife. She implies that she is lean for the same reason that the traveller’s wife would be lean, namely separation from her husband.]
