The beloved lady rests her cheeks on her lover’s lotus-like palm with her shoulder raised and her neck limp as if asleep although her face is turned aside because of bashfulness.

Dear radiant lady! The bumble bee seems to have settled on your forehead in the guise of tilak made of kasturi, with a single mind swayed by the desire for the twin fully blown lotuses in the form of your eyes. [The tilak mark on her fore head looks like a bumble bee that has come attracted by the lotus-like eyes of the lady.]

In the middle of the night, when the elders somehow forcefully placed her in front of her beloved, the lotus-eyed damsel is apprehensive about what is going to happen. [The poet empathises with the state of mind of a bashful girl at her first night.]

The cupid is worrying with his eyes closed; your friends look colourless; and again this, your love-lorn beloved looks distressed; let all this story be set aside; if you consider my advice to be in your interest, “Dear innocent girl! Do not stand on prestige. The moon will conquer your face (if you do so).” [ Your face is more beautiful than the moon when you are favourably disposed to your lover.]

O ear-ring! You are indeed blessed that you enjoy the movements of the lotus-like hands of the lady, which are the essence of all past good deeds, when doe-eyed lady adorns the ears suffering the pains (associated with the act of adorning) with a sharp cry and turning her head to one side. [ A poetic depiction of a lady wearing the ear-ring.]

Night has already come. Moon’s rays have spread in all directions. In residences ladies are adorning their limbs with jewellery. Foolish woman! if you do not reduce your anger arising out of jealousy even a bit, your slender body will wither much more than  the stalk of a lotus.

(At the time of her husband’s departure) while people are uttering  good wishes, the lady rests her face in the window of the play-house and looks at her sweet heart unsteadily with her breasts wet with dropping tears and her lips dried up by her breath.

Dear friend! As long as my beloved stayed away from my eyesight, as fate would have it, my senses lost interest in their activities. [Eyes would not see, ears would not hear, nose would not sense smell etc.]

Why do you foolishly boast that the colour of your body is like Gold? O lady who has lost hopes, only if Gold were to fall into thirsty fire could it be equal to you.[ Your body is like gold that has fallen into fire. Perhaps the lover means that the lady is like Gold that is in fire and therefore untouchable and cannot be pleasurable. May be because the lady has a bad temperament.]

As the eyes of recently married young couple meet each other due to eagerness and often bend down due to modesty, it is a feast to the eyes of the beholder. [The poet literally hails this festivity!]

Salutations to the senseless boldness of young men, which having surrendered its smallness has accepted bigness from the breasts of doe-eyed damsels. [ As youth flourishes in maidens the boldness of the young men also increases. as if its growth has been aided by the growth of maidens’ bodily features.]

The eyes of the lady, whose luster is bound-less are unsteady as if because of their inability to see each other. [Each eye wants to look at the other to enjoy its beauty, but alas it cannot and hence is unsteady.]

The doe-eyed lady restrained me by her quivering eyes and by fixing her tongue between the teeth when I wanted to hit her with mud pieces in presence of her elders. [ A nice picture of lovers’ caper.]

The lady who at one time would not tolerate even a side-glance now comfortably stays as she is embraced by her husband who is going away.

The lustre of Sita’s lotus-like eyes diminish being very apprehensive of the rising youth of Rama and (at the same time) expand enamoured of his conduct, valour, strength and lustre. [ As a bashful bride Sita is apprehensive of Rama’s youth but is very proud of his valour and conduct.]

When the cowherdess was wandering continuously to sell curds with the desire of obtaining cowries, she chanced in the streets on a sapphire originating in Mahendra mountain. [This almost reads like a proverb about how a stroke of luck could change ones fortune.]

When the good-looking woman was enjoying the beauty of Krishna’s face in order to get rid of a distaste for form in general, she lost interest in the whole world and the bodies, Oh God! [ Perhaps she was dissatisfied with her beauty and started looking at Krishna. The unexpected consequence of this was that she lost interest in the whole world and felt detached!]

Death-like winds blow as if they are the exhalations of snakes of Malaya mountain. Even this bumble bee pleasantly buzzing at the top of the mango tree makes my heart muddy. Tell me, what hope can I have in my living? [Outpourings of a love-sick young person.]

O damsel with eyes like chakora birds! In front of the radiance of your face  darkness all round gets dispelled, the distress of the distressed vanishes and the luster of the lotus gets enveloped.

While the last part of this night elapsed as I kept parying for sleep, no sooner did I touch (in the dream) the cheeks of my lady of beautiful eyes whose presence I had prayed for, than the sun also became unkind to me. How cruel! [ There was sun-rise as he touched his beloved’s cheeks in the dream and the dream broke.]

Not even the repeated studying of hundreds of Vedas or Mahabharata could allay my distress the way the word, “No” from the lotus-like shaking lustrous mouth of my beloved tired of amourous plays could.

When I mildly hit her with a lotus stalk while she was amidst elders, having seen me with my eyebrows lowered and my ear-rings dancing slightly, she turned herself away. [ The poet plays a mischief  with his lady when she was amidst elders by stroking her with a lotus stalk and feigning innocence. She notices the mischief maker and quietly turns herself away to avoid any embarrassment amidst elders.]

O auspicious sleep! Other than you who else will report (to me) of my slender beloved who while saying, “ You merciless! Ocean of lies! Leave the borders of my dress, I have known well your love for me,” shed tears copiously having removed all her ornaments. [ The poet who is away from his beloved thanks the sleep during which he dreamt of his beloved.]

I constantly remember the company of the lady, who had her neck bent low, whose amiable lotus-like eyes were slightly shut and whose limbs were languid on account of heavy breathing.

My dear lady! After having stolen successively the grandeur of jujube, aamla, mango and pomegranate fruits your breasts are now trying to steal the grandeur of the frontal globes on the head of an elephant calf.

O blue-lotus-eyed lady! Having easily outclassed the radiance of jambira fruits, your breasts which put to shame charming golden pots are now competing with the Meru mountain!  [ Wild imagination of a love-smitten youth!]

O slim lady blessed by beauty! I consider the edge of your cheeks where the charming luster of the ears (श्रवणस्य) appears under the elegant forelocks  (अलका) as the Northern direction, where Kubera’s (वैश्रवणस्य) wealth appears in the elegant city of Alakaa. [The poet contrives an analogy through use of words of double meaning. Alakaa is the capital of Kubera (वैश्रवण),  Lord of wealth.]

The luster of the navel of (my lady) whose waist was as slender as the stalk of a lotus does not descend from my mind, as she sets right her saree knot wanting to get up from the bed after having observed the light at day break.

As she played with her friends while chattering with them about my talks, having heard my voice from a distance she bore the elegance of lightning. [The lady appeared and disappeared like lightning due to shyness.]

In the night as I pretended to leave uttering falsely angry words, what words of mine did she not agree to with her body bent and tears flowing out of her eyes?

The power of discrimination born out of good thoughts from hundreds of mythology (puranas), Shastras (sacred precepts) and law books (Smruti) is in good shape as long as the playfulness of the doe-eyed lady does not enter my mind. [Much of these is fine romantic poetry that could be memorized by the youth to recite at the right occasion.]

When will my doe-eyed (wife) cool my eyes like moonlight after suddenly appearing at the door-way apprehensively hearing from others, “(your) husband has arrived,” ?  [ The lady is apprehensive perhaps because she feels she is being fooled by others or that she is not adequately dressed up to receive her husband. How will she know that her husband is too eager to see her however she be dressed? A sentiment, generally experienced by married  young men, beautifully expressed by the poet.]

The face of (my) charming lady blossomed seeing my arrival as she looked out at the door-way in the evening at the appointed time. [ The poet hints at a simile of a blue lotus blossoming at the arrival of the moon.]

Bhamini vilasah-19

Now in Bhaminivilasa
The second section
Sentiment of love
Damsel! Around your face there is not even the slightest fear of Rahu’s attack; there is no dark mark approaching; there is no paleness; An indescribable luster is increasing only. [The poet conveys that damsel’s face excels that of moon in all possible ways. Generally poets often compare a lady’s face to that of the moon. In this case the poet says that moon stands no comparison to lady’s face.]

If the softness of your limbs is to be considered, strings of lotuses are (compared to your limbs) very rough; the lotus stalks pale into insignificance, what can be said of the young sprouts? [ Poets generally compare the softness of a woman’s limbs to that of lotus, lotus stalk or young sprouts. In case of the lady who has caught the fancy of the poet those comparisons will not do.]

The indescribably beautiful state of the lady of intoxicating glances with edges of her cheeks looking graceful by the drops of sweat and made adorable by the swinging ear rings engenders happiness in my mind when I remember her.

Lady friend! Wearing a tilak of kasturi, visit the top of the terrace sporting a smile. Let the white water lilies open up and in all directions let delight spread liberally. [ The lady’s face with the tilak as the mark and her smile as moonlight acts as moon when she appears on the terrace so that water lilies open up and there is light all round!]

That pleasant smile, those breathings, that unblemished radiance of her sweet face of my lady whose eyes resemble water lilies which bloom in the evening madden my heart even now, alas.

Early in the morning as she bowed to her elders, hearing their guileless words, “become a mother of a son”, dear lady’s glances full of happiness turned towards her sweet heart who stood by her side. [The poet leaves it to the imagination of the reader to fathom the significance of her glances.]

Alas I do not forget the eyes as beautiful as the slightly opened lotuses of the doe-eyed (lady) who displayed a sense of rising confusion as she looked at me with a fear of the elderly persons around.
